GRADE 9 WORKSHOPS

Thanks to generous sponsorship from the DE BEERS TRUST we were able to visit a number of schools in the Northern Cape during the month of September 2009. In addition to visiting schools in the Kathu, Kuruman and Mothibistad areas (Upington), we took to the road and after a 4hr drive arrived in Kimberley where we were scheduled to present a workshop to just under 200 grade 9 learners at St. Boniface High School the following day.

The workshops highlights the difference in completing the FET phase at school (NSC - National Senior Certificate) against exiting school at the end of the grade 9 year to attend an FET college (NCV - National Certificate Vocational). We further guide the learner toward finding their career field of interest and assist in identifying possible "jobs" within their identified fields of interest.

Learners are then given insight with regards to identifying the most suitable subject package re their chosen career fields. Lastly we guide the learner in identifying the tertiary institution at which to pursue their studies - i.e. University, Universities of Technology or Public/Private FET Colleges.

THE AREA SURROUNDING ST. BONIFACE:

St. Boniface is located in the township of Galishiwe, Kimberley amidst homes that reflect the economic hardships endured by its inhabitants. Yet, despite the poverty that prevails, the school produces excellent results, learners are motivated and well disciplined. They are eager to learn and make something of their lives.
