FET STUDENT SUPPORT WORKSHOPS

We are most grateful to FNB for their continued sponsorship of the annual workshops held in Port Elizabeth (Iqhayiya Campus) and East London (Buffalo City FET College).   The workshops are warmly welcomed and draws positive response from the college staff and students.

The main objective of these workshops is to ready the student for the world of work on completion of his/her course of study.  Among other aspects that are covered in the workshops are: Attitude & Self Awareness;  Study & Job-hunting skills;  CV writing;  Role-playing of interviews etc.

We piloted the first workshop in 2008 with twenty (20) students in three colleges in the Eastern Cape.  Eight (8) of those students were able to immediately apply their newly found confidence in securing employment; seven (7) went on to complete their studies in 2009 and five (5) students were in the process of securing employment.

A SUCCESS STORY:

Tukela is originally from Mdantsane township outside East London.  Her mother, a domestic worker, supported her and two other schoolchildren.  When she completed her Senior Certificate in 2006, ASF awarded her a bursary to attend the Intro Management Assistant course at Buffalo City Public FET College.  Tukela put her qualification and the skills gained in the ASF workshops to good use and is currently working as a Personal Assistant to the Executive Director of NBI (National Business Initiative) in East London.  Well done Tukela - we are so very proud of you!

Thank you, once again, to FNB and the DG Murray Trust. These young men and women might not have qualified to further their studies at Universities, but you have given them the opportunity to become productive members of society.
